SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Stephen Curry has long been recognized for his remarkable shooting range and precision, whether he’s guarded closely or launching shots from the logo.
Now, the NBA’s all-time leader in 3-pointers has achieved a historic milestone from beyond the arc: Golden State’s star guard is the first player ever to reach 4,000 three-point shots made in his career.
He accomplished this feat just a day before celebrating his 37th birthday.
Curry’s landmark shot came from the right wing, under pressure from Moses Moody, with 8:19 left in the third quarter, marking his fourth attempt of the evening.
The Warriors defeated the Sacramento Kings 130-104, securing their sixth consecutive victory and 11 wins in their last 12 games, with Curry scoring 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting.
Fans erupted with cheers when Curry made this significant basket, and during a timeout shortly after, a tribute video was shown on the big screen. This included a congratulatory message from former Warriors player Andris Biedrins, who provided the assist on Curry’s very first 3-pointer.

“I had an emotional moment on the bench when I saw him. They didn’t inform me that they had located him and secured a video message from him. He was my mentor during my rookie year here,” Curry said.
“I would have loved to quiz the guys on the bench to see if anyone recognized him, as it was such a long time ago. … It’s truly amazing to reflect on how far I’ve come, from my first shot to 4,000; it’s unbelievable.”
The two-time Kia MVP entered Thursday night’s game against the Kings needing two more from long distance. He successfully made his first from the left wing with 5:35 remaining in the first quarter.
Guarded closely by Keegan Murray and DeMar DeRozan, Curry missed his second attempt from near the top of the arc, following a pair of 3-pointers from teammate Draymond Green, who scored the first six points of the game, and two additional 3s by 7-footer Quinten Post.
Curry’s next effort, a long-range shot four minutes before halftime, hit the front rim. He felt the anticipation radiating from the crowd.
“I could feel the energy and excitement right from the start of the game after I made my first 3, even when I missed the second; it was an adrenaline rush, and the fans were behind me every moment tonight,” Curry shared.
“When that second one went in, I knew there was still a lot of game left, so I tried not to get too ahead of myself. However, it was a special moment to feel that energy and share in this milestone and achievement with everyone.”

How might the team mark Curry’s latest achievement and birthday?
“What can you give to someone who already has everything? Perhaps I’ll grant him a day off,” coach Steve Kerr chuckled.
Each teammate received a special black T-shirt hanging in their locker to commemorate the occasion.
Curry dropped five 3s in Monday’s 130-120 victory over Portland. His very first career 3-pointer was on October 30, 2009, against Phoenix.
Kings coach Doug Christie reminisced about the amazing numbers Reggie Miller set.
“When Reggie Miller had (2,560), it felt like ‘Wow, that’s just outrageous,’” Christie remarked before the game, commending Curry. “He has transformed the game in so many ways, from watching him as a young kid in Toronto shooting to now standing beside him as he makes shots in your face. He deserves so much credit. It’s an incredible narrative, and knowing him, understanding the work and dedication it takes to reach such greatness, is truly humbling. I have massive respect for him.”

Curry, who recently became the 26th player in NBA history to score 25,000 points during last Saturday’s home win over Detroit, is in his 16th season in the league and shows no signs of slowing down, despite occasional rest for his knees.
“I’ve become somewhat desensitized to the 3s since they keep coming game after game; 4,000 is just a mind-blowing figure,” Kerr stated.
Back in December 2021, Curry broke Ray Allen’s previous record of 2,973.
More players could soon join Curry in the 4,000 club. Clippers guard James Harden is next in line with 3,127, while Bucks star Damian Lillard follows with 2,794.
“Steph is something we’ve never witnessed before,” Portland coach Chauncey Billups noted. “It’s been a pleasure to observe his journey and rise to greatness. I had the privilege of playing alongside him when he was just 21 on the USA team.
“That was before he became the player he is today, but you could see he was destined for greatness. He’s an indefatigable worker and, as we all know, a great individual, so I’m thrilled for his achievements. What he’s accomplished doesn’t surprise me. Spending time with him daily reveals his work ethic, and he’s simply phenomenal. He’s a joy to watch, but daunting to coach against.”
What might Kerr anticipate next from his superstar?
“8,000,” he joked.
Curry could find that enticing.
“I doubt he desires to coach for that long, so we shouldn’t put that pressure on him,” Curry replied, “but I do enjoy a good challenge.”
