In the week following the latest update of the Kia Race to the MVP Ladder, Nikola Jokić delivered an extraordinary performance, tallying 30 points, 20 rebounds, and 20 assists. However, he faced a setback due to an elbow injury during a close matchup against Oklahoma City on March 9. Nevertheless, he bounced back impressively with a dominant display against the same team on March 10, leading his team to victory.

On the other side, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took a brief hiatus to gear up for a nationally televised clash with Jokić. His prowess was on full display during Sunday’s game against the Nuggets, though he struggled the following night in a loss to Jokić, before redeeming himself with a stunning victory over the defending champions in Boston.

This highlights the competitive nature of the race for the top position on the Ladder, which is filled with excitement and anticipation.

To some voters, the outcome may already seem clear as we approach mid-March. However, this ladder suggests a tight contest—consistent with the remarkable seasons both players are having.

Arguments can be made in favor of either player for the MVP award, and they’d hold water. Yet, that conclusion is still on the horizon. For now, Jokić leads the Ladder once more, having chosen to play after his minor elbow injury, defying his coach’s decision and delivering an outstanding performance.

Looking ahead this week: Gilgeous-Alexander will face off against Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee on Sunday, with Antetokounmpo currently positioned at No. 3 on the Ladder. While the MVP debate largely revolves around two contenders, Antetokounmpo still has the opportunity to showcase why he’s in contention.

Key statistic: Jokić has achieved 29 triple-doubles this season, while the next three players combined have only 26.

What they’re saying: “I haven’t witnessed anyone stop Shai when playing one-on-one. Not a single player. He can navigate to any spot he desires.” — Nuggets coach Michael Malone.

Last week’s ranking: No. 2
Season stats: 29 points, 12.9 rebounds, 10.4 assists

His case: Jokić is among the top three players in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals, showcasing an extraordinary performance level with just month of regular-season play remaining. If he maintains these standings, it would set a new NBA record.

As Malone noted, Jokić is accomplishing feats we’ve never seen before. And in Jokić’s own words, this is his finest season yet — high praise from a three-time MVP.

Last week’s ranking: No. 1
Season stats: 32.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.2 assists

His case: Although Gilgeous-Alexander may not end the season as the steals leader, currently held by Dyson Daniels of Atlanta, his potential finish as the leading scorer while ranking third in steals (1.8 per game) illustrates his two-way talent.

Additionally, the Thunder have secured a playoff spot and could potentially dominate the West by a significant margin. Gilgeous-Alexander has triumphed over strong opponents throughout the season even in the absence of key teammates.

Last week’s ranking: No. 3
Season stats: 30.5 points, 12.1 rebounds, 5.9 assists

His case: Antetokounmpo continues to have a stellar season despite dealing with a lingering calf issue. He ranks second in scoring and is likely to finish among the top four rebounders. Only Jokić, Domantas Sabonis, and Karl-Anthony Towns have more double-doubles (and they have played extra games).

A significant showdown is on the horizon with Gilgeous-Alexander, important not only for the MVP Ladder but also to help the Bucks maintain their position within the top six in the East.

Last week’s ranking: No. 4
Season stats: 27.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, 5.9 assists

His case: Tatum, currently the fourth-highest scorer in the league, has experienced 26 games with 30 or more points. Post All-Star break, he’s averaging 28 points along with nearly 10 rebounds and seven assists.

This season is arguably shaping up to be his best yet, as his all-around contributions are propelling the Celtics into a strong position in the East.

Last week’s ranking: No. 7
Season stats: 24.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists

His case: At least one player from the Cleveland Cavaliers (holding the best record in the league) surely deserves a spot in the top 10, correct? They actually have two — Mitchell and Evan Mobley. Mitchell, in particular, is recognized as the team’s primary leader and most versatile player.

With the Cavaliers perched comfortably ahead of the second-place Celtics, Mitchell may opt to pace himself in the weeks to come to ensure health for the playoffs, as his resting decisions will be closely tied to the race for the top seed.

6. Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors
7. Evan Mobley, Cleveland Cavaliers
8. LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers
9. Cade Cunningham, Detroit Pistons
10. Jalen Brunson, New York Knicks

And five additional players (listed alphabetically): Jaren Jackson Jr., Memphis Grizzlies; Domantas Sabonis, Sacramento Kings; Alperen Sengun, Houston Rockets; Karl-Anthony Towns, New York Knicks; Trae Young, Atlanta Hawks
