The evolving narrative surrounding the NBA’s potential expansion into Europe, commonly referred to as NBA Europe, has identified 11 European cities as prospective locations.
According to Serbian source Meridian Sports, the NBA has pinpointed Madrid, Barcelona, Munich, Berlin, Paris, London, Manchester, Milan, Rome, Istanbul, and Athens as prime candidates for its initiatives in the European market.
This selection emerges from a combination of thorough research and discussions reflecting the league’s interests.
In an upcoming session, the NBA Board of Governors is set to delve deeper into the initiative, with FIBA’s secretary general, Andreas Zagklis, expected to participate, as reported on Thursday. The prospects of a European expansion are likely to feature prominently in their agenda.
Tony Parker, president of LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, emphasized the need for collaboration, stating, “We either come to an agreement or the NBA will go it alone. Our focus should be on forming a merger or partnership,” hinting at potential future developments.
Open discussions between the NBA and Euroleague Basketball have been confirmed, as highlighted in a recent Eurohoops report. Notable European clubs currently competing in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague could potentially be involved, although their exact role in NBA Europe remains uncertain.
The timeline for introducing the NBA to the European landscape is also ambiguous. Given logistical challenges and existing constraints, a reimagined or completely new league could debut in European basketball as early as the 2026-27 season.
