Irving sustained his injury during the first quarter of the Mavericks’ 122-98 defeat to the Sacramento Kings on Monday. Despite the pain, he managed to sink two free throws while visibly emotional before exiting the game.

As a result of this injury, he will miss the remainder of the season and is expected to be nearing recovery when teams begin training camp this fall. Irving also holds a $44 million player option for the upcoming season.

The 32-year-old was fouled by DeMar DeRozan while driving toward the basket, causing his right foot to land on the foot of the Kings’ Jonas Valanciunas. He lost his footing and awkwardly landed on his left leg, which appeared to hyperextend before he fell.

This latest injury adds to a season filled with medical challenges for the Mavericks, who previously lost 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis to a groin injury in his Dallas debut following the significant trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers. Davis made his return to the lineup on March 24 against Brooklyn after a six-week recovery period from his own injury.

Irving’s presence was a crucial factor in the Mavericks’ decision to move forward with the contentious Davis-for-Dončić trade, a decision that sparked outrage among Dallas fans.

After his injury, Irving was seen clutching his leg and remained on the court for several minutes. Davis, who himself is currently recovering, assisted Irving to the locker room before Coach Kidd had a conversation with him, after which he returned to convert two free throws.

After hitting both, bringing the score to 23-18 in favor of Sacramento, Irving was then assisted down the tunnel, and the Mavericks quickly ruled him out for the remainder of the game due to a left knee sprain.

A nine-time All-Star, Irving had been averaging 25 points per game and had become Dallas’ key perimeter threat following the trade of superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers on February 1. Throughout this season, Irving appeared in 50 games (compared to 58 last season for Dallas) and had been on a scoring surge, tallying 30 points in five of his last seven outings.
