Memphis Takes Bold Step: Tuomas Iisalo Elevated to Interim Head Coach Amid Coaching Shake-Up

In a remarkable development, the Memphis Grizzlies have appointed assistant coach Tuomas Iisalo as their interim head coach, according to Shams Charania.

The team has opted to part ways with Taylor Jenkins, who is regarded as one of the most esteemed young coaches in the NBA. In an interesting move, they are entrusting the team’s direction to Iisalo, a highly respected young coach from Europe, at least for the time being.

Iisalo, hailing from Finland, has garnered attention in Europe by leading Ulm to victory in the Basketball Champions League and subsequently guiding Paris Basketball to a EuroCup title.

His next logical move, following Paris’s promotion to the EuroLeague, was to transition to the NBA as an assistant.

At 42 years old, Iisalo has already earned accolades such as the EuroCup Coach of the Year in 2024, the BCL Coach of the Year in 2023, and the French LNB Pro A Coach of the Year in 2024. Additionally, he was recognized as the German BBL Coach of the Year for both 2022 and 2023.

He is celebrated as an offensive innovator, renowned in Europe for the fast-paced style of play characteristic of his teams.
