PHOENIX (AP)— During the third quarter with 6:57 remaining in the game against Houston on Sunday night, Phoenix Suns All-Star Kevin Durant was escorted to the locker room following a fall caused by a collision with Jabari Smith Jr. of the Rockets.
A foul was called on Smith under the basket as Durant hit the ground. Though the 6-foot-10 forward managed to get back on his feet, he was unable to put any pressure on his left leg, seemingly having stepped on Smith’s foot in the process.
After Houston secured a 148-109 win, Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer announced that Durant would undergo an MRI on his left ankle on Monday and would not travel with the team to Milwaukee for their game on Tuesday night. In addition, the Suns have upcoming matchups against Boston and New York within the week.
With only two weeks left in the season and a total of six games remaining, the Suns were already confronting a tough challenge to secure the final Western Conference play-in spot, trailing the Sacramento Kings by 1.5 games.
Durant played for 23 minutes, recording 11 points and eight rebounds. Earlier in the season, he reached eighth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.
