SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – The Sacramento Kings have mutually decided to part ways with general manager Monte McNair, two years after his efforts helped the team break the longest playoff drought in NBA history.
A source familiar with the situation revealed that the decision to separate was reached shortly after the Kings concluded their season with a 120-106 defeat against Dallas in the Play-In Tournament. This individual requested anonymity as the team had not formally announced the change.
The Athletic was the first to report McNair’s departure as general manager.

McNair joined the Sacramento front office prior to the 2020-21 season and played a crucial role in assembling the roster that ended the franchise’s 16-season playoff drought in 2023, achieving a record of 48-34 and finishing third in the Western Conference. He received the NBA Executive of the Year award for the 2022-23 season.
That year, the Kings faced the Golden State Warriors in a first-round playoff series, which went to seven games, but they have since struggled to return to the playoffs, falling short in the Play-In Tournament for the last two seasons.
Despite securing at least 40 wins in each of the last three seasons—a feat they hadn’t accomplished in the prior 16 years—the Kings have not made the leap necessary to become a serious contender in the Western Conference.
