Nikola Pekovic, a former professional basketball player, has reportedly been implicated in a criminal organization by the Montenegrin Police Directorate.
During a raid across 11 sites in the northern part of Montenegro, law enforcement made two arrests and issued multiple misdemeanor citations. According to the Montenegrin news outlet Vijesti, one of the vehicles that was confiscated during the operation was registered in Pekovic’s name.
The 39-year-old has been identified as affiliated with the criminal network run by the Saric brothers. It is uncertain if this latest association will lead to further legal repercussions for him.
The police discovered various items during their investigation of the vehicle, including illegal firearms, military-grade equipment, marijuana, and opiate pills, as stated in their press release.
Pekovic’s NBA career spanned 271 games with the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2010 to 2016. In addition, he competed in 98 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague matches from 2005 to 2011, notably winning a championship with Panathinaikos in 2009. After a successful junior career representing Serbia and Montenegro, he shone on the senior stage by playing for Montenegro in EuroBasket 2011.
After struggling with injuries, Pekovic was released by the Timberwolves at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season and officially retired from professional basketball. However, he has remained involved in the sport, returning to play for his national team and his former club, Partizan. He has also held leadership positions, serving as president of the Basketball Federation of Montenegro, KSCG, and the Belgrade-based club.
