Headline: From Benchwarmer to Game Changer: Davion Mitchell Powers Miamis Overtime Upset Over Hawks in Play-In Showdown

ATLANTA (AP)— In the initial two quarters of the NBA Play-In Tournament elimination match against Atlanta, Miami’s backup guard Davion Mitchell appeared far from being a standout performer.

During the first half, Mitchell failed to convert any of his four attempts and managed to score just a single point. At the conclusion of regulation, his tally stood at a mere seven points.

Then, Mitchell found his rhythm. With the Heat and Atlanta locked at 106 heading into overtime, he sank three of four attempts— all from beyond the arc— to help propel Miami to a 123-114 victory on Friday night. He ultimately finished the game with 16 points, contributing to Miami’s advancement in the playoffs, where they will face the Eastern Conference’s top seed, Cleveland.

This marks the first time a No. 10 seed from either conference has reached the playoffs since the Play-In format was introduced in the 2020-21 season. Furthermore, Miami is the first play-in team to progress with victories on the road in two consecutive games.

Tyler Herro provided a strong performance as well, scoring two three-pointers in overtime and leading the team with 30 points.

While Herro’s offensive output was anticipated, Mitchell’s rise to prominence came as a surprise. He revitalized his game for overtime by hitting a three-pointer in the fourth quarter.

“His ability to turn around after struggling in the first half and produce in the fourth quarter and overtime truly demonstrates his character,” commented Miami coach Erik Spoelstra regarding Mitchell.

Mitchell acknowledged that the support from Spoelstra and his teammates instilled the confidence he needed to keep shooting, particularly in overtime.

“I felt like I was trying too hard in the first half, forcing the action,” Mitchell reflected. “I just needed to reset mentally and allow the game to come to me. I trust in the work I’ve put in, and it’s alright to miss shots.”

Mitchell, who averaged 7.9 points, scored 15 and hit both of his three-pointers in Miami’s 109-90 victory over Chicago in their first Play-In Tournament matchup on Wednesday.

The standout performance against the Hawks was particularly special for Mitchell, who was returning to his home state. Born in Hinesville, Georgia, he started his college journey at Auburn before transferring to Baylor, where he played a pivotal role in securing the school’s first NCAA championship.

Mitchell began his professional career with Sacramento and joined Miami after being traded from Toronto in a five-team deal on February 6 that involved Jimmy Butler moving to Golden State.
