Miami Heat Eye NBA Veteran Sergio Scariolo for Associate Coaching Role Under Erik Spoelstra

The Miami Heat are showing interest in Sergio Scariolo for the role of associate coach.

If he makes a return to the NBA, he would work alongside head coach Erik Spoelstra.

This development was reported by Alex Molina of Eurohoops Spain on Monday, and comes on the heels of a previous story regarding the 64-year-old Italian coach’s visit to the United States to conduct interviews with an NBA team.

Scariolo, who is 64 years old, has previously worked as an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors under Nick Nurse from 2018 to 2021, where he contributed to their 2019 NBA championship victory. Subsequently, he left the Canadian franchise to take on a multi-year deal with Virtus Segafredo Bologna as head coach of the Italian club.

Since 2015, he has been serving as the head coach of the Spanish national team, leading them to remarkable successes including gold medals at the 2019 FIBA World Cup, and at the EuroBasket tournaments in 2009, 2011, 2015, and 2022. Additionally, he garnered silver at the 2012 Olympic Games and bronze at both the 2016 Olympics and the 2017 EuroBasket.

Scariolo’s extensive coaching resume includes a recent position with Virtus Bologna during the 2022-23 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season, along with previous roles in Europe’s top club competition at teams such as Laboral Kutxa, EA7 Milano, Khimki, Unicaja Malaga, Real Madrid, Tau Ceramica, Teamsystem Bologna, and Scavolini Pesaro. His long-standing career dates back to the 1980s and features a championship win in the 7DAYS EuroCup in 2022 with Virtus Bologna, alongside numerous domestic titles across Italy, Spain, and Russia.
