In December, Victor Wembanyama became a sensation when he took some time to engage with fans in New York by playing chess during the NBA Christmas Games 2024 while with the San Antonio Spurs. After facing a troubling injury that prematurely ended his 2024-25 season with the Spurs, he made a comeback in another viral moment by joining a young boy for a game of H.O.R.S.E. in San Antonio.
Miller Borushko, who had the chance to play with Wemby on a local court, shared his experience with the local news outlet KSAT.
“He approached me and asked for my name. I introduced myself as ‘Miller,’ to which he replied, ‘I’m Victor,’” the young boy recounted, “I tried to keep my cool about it.”
Wembanyama then proposed a game of H.O.R.S.E., which happened to be recorded by a nearby security camera.
“Wemby won,” Borushko remembered, his excitement evident, “He clinched the victory with a left-handed three-pointer.”
“He could have easily dunked to secure the win, but he chose not to,” the child explained how he managed to score an H and an O against an NBA star, “He just wanted to enjoy the moment.”
Borushko also remembered that Wembanyama was initially accompanied by a young woman, suggesting that playing basketball wasn’t part of their original plan.
“I think that was the case since he didn’t have a ball on him, so it seems he wasn’t intending to play,” he said, highlighting how the Le Chesnay native aimed to connect with the community through such thoughtful gestures.
Borushko noted that shortly after their game, a crowd formed around the playground, and Wemby took some time to take pictures before leaving.
“I still can’t quite wrap my head around how incredible this is,” he admitted, “I feel really fortunate.”
In addition to inspiring young fans, Wembanyama is anticipated to receive medical clearance for the 2025 preseason with the Spurs. Nevertheless, he is likely to miss the opportunity to represent France’s senior national team at EuroBasket 2025.
