LeBron James reflected on the possibility of retirement but did not specify a clear timeline for when he might hang up his sneakers.
During his appearance on the ‘360 With Speedy’ podcast, the 40-year-old forward acknowledged, “I know I’m past my peak. I won’t be playing another 23 years, that’s for sure, and it won’t be another 10 either.”
“I’m definitely approaching the end. Although I’m not there yet,” he added, highlighting his experience as a four-time NBA champion with 22 seasons under his belt.
As he heads into his 23rd season after being the first overall pick in the 2003 draft, the 2025-26 season will mark his eighth with the Los Angeles Lakers, following 11 years with the Cleveland Cavaliers and four seasons with the Miami Heat.
In the previous season, he participated in 75 games across the Regular Season and Playoffs, averaging 24.5 points, 8.0 assists, 7.9 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game. Clearly, he shows no signs of declining; however, the prospect of retirement looms closer.
“Retirement is on the horizon,” he remarked, “but it’s not imminent.”
During the interview, which took place during his recent trip to China, LeBron discussed various topics, including his controversial claim to have predicted Kobe Bryant’s legendary 81-point game in 2006 and named Derrick Tarver, a player from his youth league, as the toughest opponent he has ever guarded.
