Chosen as the 20th overall selection in this year’s draft, Lithuanian guard Kasparas Jakucionis, a former Barcelona youth player, made a notable impression in his debut NBA game.
After sitting out the Miami Heat’s first two preseason matchups due to a sprained left wrist, Jakucionis contributed eight points and ten assists, alongside just three turnovers, in 25 minutes during the Heat’s 112–107 defeat to the Spurs at Kaseya Center.
The rookie quickly showcased his exceptional court awareness, recording four assists within his initial four minutes on the court.
“He possesses great vision,” said Erik Spoelstra, according to the Miami Herald. “That might have contributed to some turnovers back in college. He has the courage and willingness to go for plays. He has the vision, and he’s eager to execute it.”
Jakucionis kicked off the game with a series of impressive passes, assisting Keshad Johnson and Jaime Jaquez Jr. for transition dunks and connecting with Kel’el Ware for several scoring opportunities, including a three-pointer.
“Sometimes he simplifies the game, making the easy pass, which is exactly what receivers appreciate,” Spoelstra noted. “You can see a natural synergy between him and Kel’el.”
Despite his standout play, Jakucionis approached the moment with humility.
“I don’t know. I’m just focusing on playing quickly, even though I feel we could have played even faster today,” he remarked. “Everything stems from practice. I’m just trying to do my part.”
Goran Dragić, a Heat legend and Jakucionis’ mentor, was present to witness his first game.
“It means a lot to have someone like him as a mentor, and I’m eager to absorb all the knowledge he offers,” Jakucionis said. “He shares invaluable advice, and I’m doing my best to listen and ask questions whenever needed, soaking up everything I can.”
Reflecting on Dragić’s counsel, Jakucionis summarized his insights:
“Just play quickly, play intelligently, and leverage my strengths against others.”
