Rookie Kasparas Jakucionis Shines in NBA Debut, Credits Goran Dragić as Key Mentor

In this year’s draft, Lithuanian guard Kasparas Jakucionis, who was a product of Barcelona’s youth academy, was selected as the overall 20th pick and made a notable impression during his debut in the NBA.

After sitting out Miami’s initial two preseason games due to a sprained left wrist, Jakucionis contributed eight points and ten assists, along with just three turnovers, in 25 minutes of play during the Heat’s 112–107 defeat to the Spurs at the Kaseya Center.

He quickly showcased his exceptional court vision, delivering four assists within his first four minutes on the court.

“He possesses great vision,” Erik Spoelstra remarked, according to the Miami Herald. “That might have led to some turnovers during his college days. He has the bravery to attempt plays. So, he’s got the vision, and he’s willing to make those attempts.”

Jakucionis kicked off the game with an array of impressive passes, assisting Keshad Johnson and Jaime Jaquez Jr. for dunks in transition and setting up Kel’el Ware for several scores, including a three-pointer.

“Sometimes he simply makes the right play, moving the ball, which is exactly what receivers appreciate,” Spoelstra noted. “You can see a natural chemistry between him and Kel’el.”

Despite his impressive debut, Jakucionis maintained a modest demeanor.

“I’m not sure. I’m just striving to play at a fast pace, although I believe we could have played even quicker today,” he stated. “But it all stems from practice. I aim to do my job well.”

Attending his debut was his mentor Goran Dragić, a celebrated figure in Heat history who had helped Jakucionis during training camp.

“Having a mentor like him means a lot, and I’m trying to absorb all the knowledge he shares,” Jakucionis explained. “He offers me valuable advice, and I make it a point to listen closely, asking questions whenever needed.”

Reflecting on Dragić’s guidance, Jakucionis succinctly stated:

“Just play quickly, think smartly, and leverage my strengths against my opponents.”
