Kristaps Porzingis appears to prefer not to pursue a contract extension at this time, choosing instead to concentrate on the upcoming 2025-26 NBA Regular Season with the Atlanta Hawks.
“I understand that’s a possibility, but I want to see how the season unfolds,” the 30-year-old forward/center stated in a recent interview with The Athletic. “I aim to demonstrate that I can play at a high level again, that I’m healthy, and that I’m everything I need to be; then everything else will follow, you know? We’ll see how it goes.”
Porzingis is in line for a new deal this season, but if he does not sign a new contract with the Hawks, he will become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
“I don’t want to rush into anything or make any statements prematurely; I prefer to take it day by day,” he clarified.
Last July, just before his participation in EuroBasket 2025 with Latvia’s senior national team, the Liepaja native was traded from the Boston Celtics to the Hawks, taking his contract with him. He is set to earn around $30.7 million in the upcoming season.
After six games in Riga, Porzingis posted averages of 20.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.7 blocks, and 0.5 steals per game, helping his nation secure 12th place in the final standings.
This upcoming season marks his tenth year in the NBA, following two seasons with the Celtics, inclusive of the 2023-24 championship run, one season with the Washington Wizards, three seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, and four years with the New York Knicks, who selected him as the fourth overall pick in the 2015 draft.
