Kevin Durant has reached a two-year, $90 million contract extension agreement with the Houston Rockets, according to ESPN’s senior NBA insider Shams Charania, as reported on Sunday.
The 37-year-old versatile forward had the opportunity to secure a maximum extension worth $120 million. However, he chose to forgo some earnings to aid his new team in maintaining flexibility within the salary cap following his trade to the Texas franchise in July.
This new contract guarantees the next two years, and it also includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. With the 2025-26 Regular Season about to kick off on Wednesday, the Rockets, under the leadership of coach Ime Udoka, will face off against the reigning champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, at the Paycom Center on Tuesday.
Prior to teaming up with Turkish star Alperen Sengun in Houston, Durant accumulated 1,293 games played in the NBA, with stints on the Phoenix Suns, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, and the Oklahoma City Thunder/Seattle SuperSonics. He clinched two NBA championships with the Warriors in 2017 and 2018, earning Finals MVP honors both times. Additionally, he was honored as the season MVP during the 2013-14 campaign.
Durant has represented the United States in multiple FIBA tournaments, securing Olympic gold medals in 2012, 2016, 2021, and 2024. He is the first male athlete to achieve four gold medals and is aiming for a fifth in Los Angeles in 2028.
During the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Durant was awarded the MVP title for the tournament and previously combined gold with an MVP accolade at the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
