Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat and Chauncey Billups of the Portland Trail Blazers have been taken into custody, according to ESPN’s senior NBA insider, Shams Charania.
The arrests stem from an FBI investigation into illicit sports betting, and a press conference is scheduled for Thursday at 16:00 CET, featuring the Eastern District of New York and FBI Director Kash Patel.
Rozier, aged 30, was apprehended early Thursday morning at an Orlando hotel. The Ohio native did not participate in the Miami Heat’s opener of the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season against the Orlando Magic at the Kia Center on Wednesday night, despite having received medical clearance from a hamstring injury.
There was unusual betting activity concerning Rozier’s performance ahead of a game between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans. Notably, a professional gambler placed 30 bets within 46 minutes, amassing a total of $13,759. Rozier only played ten minutes before leaving the game early due to a foot injury.
After spending two seasons playing for Louisville under Rick Pitino, Rozier was selected by the Boston Celtics as the 15th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. He played with the Celtics for four years before joining the Hornets from 2019 to 2024, and was traded to the Heat midway through the 2023-24 season.
Billups, 49, was arrested in Oregon as part of a separate, yet related, illegal gambling investigation involving a poker operation allegedly connected to organized crime, according to ABC News. The former NBA Finals MVP with the Detroit Pistons in 2004 has been serving as head coach of the Blazers since 2021.
