In light of the recent betting scandal that has rocked the NBA, Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal has openly addressed the matter, sharing his disappointment and issuing a cautionary message to current players.
O’Neal, known for his straightforwardness, reflected on the allure of gambling while emphasizing the importance of adhering to the league’s regulations.
“I don’t want to present myself as someone without flaws; occasionally, I indulge in some card games or roulette when I visit Vegas,” O’Neal remarked during the latest episode of Inside the NBA. “You never want to have your name associated with something you know is against the rules. I’m aware they hold meetings to inform players about the ‘do’s and don’ts.’ All of them were informed.”
“I feel shame that these individuals would risk their families and their careers,” @SHAQ commented on the arrest of Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier, and Damon Jones as part of a sports betting investigation. pic.twitter.com/J8XtbpMqKI

The NBA is grappling with questions of integrity as investigations unfold concerning alleged wagering activities involving multiple players and staff. The league’s regulations explicitly forbid gambling on its games, with penalties that could range from suspensions and fines to lifetime bans.
O’Neal conveyed particular disappointment regarding two former teammates entangled in the situation.
“I have a close relationship with Chauncey Billups and Damon Jones; I’ve played alongside them,” O’Neal stated. “I’m embarrassed that they would jeopardize their families and careers like this. There’s an adage from the neighborhood: ‘Not all money is good money.’ If you’re earning $9 million a year, how much more do you really need? It’s clear that getting caught could lead to jail time and the end of your career.”
