Wembys Block Party: Chasing History with Every Rejection on the Court

The San Antonio Spurs, along with their exceptional French talent Victor Wembanyama, have kicked off the 2025/26 season impressively, achieving a 4–0 record following a 121–103 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

The 21-year-old showcased another stellar outing, scoring 24 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, while also extending his notable defensive record with his 19th block of the season.

As the leader in the league for blocked shots, Wembanyama has accumulated more rejections than several teams combined. However, what stands out even more is that his block against the Raptors marked the 89th consecutive game he has registered at least one block.

With this achievement, he ascended to fourth place on the all-time streak list, eclipsing Patrick Ewing’s previous mark of 88 games. He now trails only Mark Eaton (94), Dikembe Mutombo (116), and Ewing’s impressive record of 145 consecutive games with a block.

After the victory over Toronto, Wembanyama was inquired about whether he actively seeks blocks during games.

“I don’t think so, because there are times I’m going after blocks even when I’ve already achieved six,” he replied with a grin. “It’s part of my responsibility.”

Opponents frequently hesitated to attack the basket in Wembanyama’s vicinity, sometimes opting to throw the ball out of bounds rather than confront him. This led the young star to believe that his defensive influence extends far beyond just blocks.

“Oh absolutely. I feel I had a strong defensive performance — whether or not I got blocks,” he shared. “There are numerous ways to make an impact on the game. It’ll become increasingly common for players to pass up shots.”

When a reporter proposed the idea of tracking a statistic for “drives thwarted” — indicating the instances where opponents choose not to challenge him — Wembanyama concurred.

“Yeah, that’s an excellent idea. We do extensive video analysis with Sean Sweeney to review different situations,” he noted. “Often, even before we get to the shot itself — before making the block — there are strategies we can employ ahead of time.”
