Shaquille O’Neal has always readily identified himself as one of the premier centers in the history of the NBA.
Nonetheless, the former Lakers star did not hesitate to credit a contemporary athlete who, according to him, may have achieved an even greater height in the sport.
“We play in different styles, but I’d have to mention Giannis. The game has certainly progressed since my era. That’s what you aspire to see – the game’s evolution,” O’Neal remarked when asked about a comparison with Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo in their respective primes.
This season, Antetokounmpo has made a sensational start, resembling the imposing force that O’Neal once embodied. In his first three games, he has averaged 36.3 points and 14.0 rebounds, contributing significantly to Milwaukee’s impressive start.
In a game against the New York Knicks on Tuesday, Giannis delivered a stellar performance with 37 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, one steal, and two blocks, further solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s top players.
