Sam Presti, the General Manager of the Oklahoma City Thunder, has revealed that Nikola Topić has been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
The Serbian point guard, who has faced a series of injuries throughout his brief career, is currently undergoing a medical procedure related to this issue.
“At the onset of training camp, he underwent a procedure to assess whether Nikola was facing testicular cancer. The biopsy results have confirmed that he is indeed dealing with testicular cancer,” Presti stated.
Presti also shared some encouraging news regarding Topić’s situation.
“He is supported by an exceptional team of oncologists who are highly optimistic. It’s crucial to highlight that testicular cancer has one of the highest cure rates among cancers affecting men. He has been advised to begin chemotherapy.”
Additionally, the Thunder’s GM mentioned that Topić has started this treatment.
“Nikola preferred to keep this matter private until he commenced his treatment, which has recently begun.”
As expected, basketball is not his top focus at this moment.
“He is present during the entire process and is training, but we all recognize that it will be a challenging journey. The medical team remains positive about his long-term prognosis. Presently, his recovery takes precedence. Our only expectation is for him to concentrate on this. That is the main priority. He will return to the court when he is able, without any pressure from us. He has our unwavering support, love, and encouragement.”
In June 2024, Oklahoma City Thunder selected Topić as the 12th overall pick in the NBA Draft. However, just weeks prior to the draft, he suffered a partially torn ACL during the European playoffs, a significant setback that has kept him from making his NBA debut thus far.
