Spurs Make History with 5-0 Start, Wembanyama Leads the Charge

The San Antonio Spurs improved to 5-0 in the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season by defeating the Miami Heat, 107-101, at the Frost Bank Center, marking the first time in franchise history that they have started a season with five consecutive victories. Victor Wembanyama led the team with an impressive performance, contributing 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, five blocks, and one steal in just under 40 minutes of play.

“We put in the effort. We’ve started the season on a strong note, and we intend to maintain this winning streak for as long as we can. It’s rewarding to see our hard work translate into wins, especially since we might perform well but not always secure the victories we desire,” the 21-year-old French center remarked at the postgame press conference, in response to a question about the historic 5-0 start.

“I’ll keep pushing as long as I’m blocking more shots than I’m getting dunked on, but we might not live to see that day,” Wembanyama humorously commented on his aggressive defensive play.

His teammate Jeremy Sochan, who is nursing a left wrist sprain, remained on the injury report. Conversely, Kasparas Jakucionis of Lithuania is also injured with a right groin strain, while Vladislav Goldin from Russia was inactive. However, Italian Simone Fontecchio stepped up with 18 points, Swedish Pelle Larsson scored five, and Serbian Nikola Jovic logged 9:30 of play despite suffering a right hip contusion, though he did not score.

“We’re definitely looking forward to having a full roster, but right now, our focus should be on the players available and the present moment,” Fontecchio, 29, stated regarding the limited options for head coach Erik Spoelstra.

Bilal Coulibaly, a former teammate of Wembanyama at Metropolitans 92 and recently recovering from right thumb surgery due to an injury from EuroBasket 2025, returned to action for the Washington Wizards, scoring 16 points as a starter in a 127-108 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center. Also in the starting five, French player Alex Sarr contributed 14 points, while Swiss player Kyshawn George added 12 points. Serbian substitute Tristan Vukcevic also saw limited action with three points. Belgian Ajay Mitchell helped the defending champions improve to 6-0 by scoring 20 points off the bench, with German starter Isaiah Hartenstein contributing 17 points and Frenchman Ousmane Dieng corresponding two points, while Serbian Nikola Topic remains inactive for treatment of testicular cancer.

In a bid to end a four-game losing streak, the Orlando Magic emerged victorious against the Charlotte Hornets, winning 123-107 at Spectrum Center. Franz Wagner, playing through a left heel contusion on the backend of a back-to-back, led all scorers with 21 points, while fellow German Tristan da Silva added 19 points. Georgian Goga Bitadze chipped in six points and French Noah Penda three points, although German Moritz Wagner continued to recover from a left knee injury. For the hosts, French reserves Moussa Diabate scored ten points, while Tidjane Salaun did not get on the scoreboard.

Despite Greek superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo initially being listed as probable due to left knee soreness and ultimately ruled out for Thursday’s game, the Milwaukee Bucks overpowered the Golden State Warriors, 120-110, at Fiserv Forum. His brothers also missed the game, with Thanasis on the bench and Alex out of the lineup. Dutch player Quinten Post started for Golden State, playing for just under nine and a half minutes and grabbing three rebounds.
