Spurs Make History with Unbeaten Start: Wembanyama Celebrates Team Effort in 5-0 Streak

The San Antonio Spurs achieved a remarkable 5-0 start in the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season, defeating the Miami Heat 107-101 at the Frost Bank Center. This marks the first time in franchise history that the team has opened a season with five consecutive victories. Victor Wembanyama led the charge with an impressive performance, contributing 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, five blocks, and one steal while playing just under 40 minutes.

“We put in the effort,” the 21-year-old French center stated in the post-game press conference when asked about the historic 5-0 record. “Starting off strong like this is great, and we aim to maintain this momentum as long as we can. It’s rewarding to see wins come our way, especially since we’ve had times where we’ve played well but didn’t end up with the victories we hoped for.”

In a lighthearted moment, Wembanyama commented, “I’ll keep pushing as long as I’m blocking more shots than I’m getting dunked on, but let’s hope none of us see that day.”

His teammate, Polish player Jeremy Sochan, is dealing with a left wrist sprain and remains on the injury list. On the Heat’s side, Lithuania’s Kasparas Jakucionis is also sidelined due to a right groin strain, and Russia’s Vladislav Goldin was unavailable. Despite this, Italy’s Simone Fontecchio scored 18 points, Sweden’s Pelle Larsson added five, and Serbian Nikola Jovic played for 9:30 minutes with a right hip contusion, though he did not score.

Simone Fontecchio spoke about the situation, saying, “It will definitely be intriguing when we’re back to full strength, but for now, we need to focus on the players available and how we can make the most out of our current lineup.”

Bilal Coulibaly, a former teammate of Wembanyama with Metropolitans 92, returned from surgery on his right thumb that resulted from an injury at EuroBasket 2025. He started for the Washington Wizards and scored 16 points, but the team fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 127-108, at Paycom Center. Teammate Alex Sarr notched 14 points while Kyshawn George from Switzerland scored 12, and Serbian Tristan Vukcevic managed three points off the bench. The Thunder improved to 6-0, with Belgian Ajay Mitchell contributing 20 points off the bench, German starter Isaiah Hartenstein scoring 17, and Frenchman Ousmane Dieng adding two points, while Serbian Nikola Topic was inactive due to treatment for testicular cancer.

Breaking a four-game losing streak, the Orlando Magic defeated the Charlotte Hornets 123-107 at Spectrum Center. Franz Wagner played through a left heel contusion and recorded a game-high 21 points. His fellow German Tristan da Silva contributed 19 points, while Georgian Goga Bitadze added six, and Noah Penda, also from France, scored three. However, Moritz Wagner remains sidelined as he recovers from a left knee injury. For the Magic, French reserves Moussa Diabate and Tidjane Salaun contributed with ten points and remained scoreless, respectively.

In the absence of star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was initially listed as probable due to left knee soreness but ultimately ruled out, the Milwaukee Bucks still managed to overpower the Golden State Warriors 120-110 at Fiserv Forum. Both of his brothers were also not playing, with Thanasis sitting on the bench and Alex not in the lineup. Dutch player Quinten Post lasted just under ten minutes for the Warriors, collecting three rebounds.
