Villanova landed a transfer commitment from former Miami guard Wooga Poplar on Wednesday as the Wildcats picked up a desperately needed addition to their 2024-25 roster, according to multiple reports. Poplar is ranked the No. 33 player in the CBS Sports Transfer Rankings and should immediately slot in as a key piece of Villanova’s starting lineup during the season ahead.
Poplar, a 6-foot-5 guard, averaged 13.1 points per game for the Hurricanes this past season on 38.5% 3-point shooting. He was a full-time starter for two of his three seasons with the program and played a significant role on the ‘Canes journey to the 2023 Final Four.
His commitment comes at a critical juncture for third-year Villanova coach Kyle Neptune, who is seeking to get the Wildcats back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since legendary coach Jay Wright’s sudden retirement following the 2021-22 season. Neptune is off to a 35-33 (20-20 Big East) start and is replacing several key players from last year’s squad.
Villanova received a good bit of news before the NBA Draft withdrawal deadline, when leading scorer Eric Dixon announced his return or a sixth and final season in the program. Dixon’s decision, combined with Poplar’s commitment, should at least give the Wildcats a fighting chance at reaching the Big Dance in 2025.
As the final significant commitments of the 2024 transfer cycle roll in, we’ll continue update the rankings. For now, here’s a rundown of the top 80 transfers of college basketball’s 2024 offseason.
