The Orlando Magic were unable to surpass the reigning champion Boston Celtics in the opening round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs, resulting in the conclusion of their season.
Star player Paolo Banchero reflected on his year, particularly noting how an early injury restricted him to only 46 games during the regular season.
“I anticipated a breakout season. After scoring 50 points in my fourth game, I thought that would set the tone for the rest of the year. But then I got hurt in the very next game,” the Magic forward shared during the exit interviews on Thursday.
Banchero acknowledged that the injury served as a significant learning opportunity.
“It was a real wake-up call for me. You can prepare meticulously and still face injuries, which means you have to adapt. Moving forward, I need to be more attentive to how I listen to my body. How can I better tune into what I need? It’s crucial to avoid trying to be ‘Superman’ right at the start of the season. I need to approach it with an 82-game strategy. That’s the lesson I’ve taken away, and I’m looking forward to the next season.”
With one year left on his rookie deal, Banchero is in line to sign a five-year, $247 million maximum extension this summer.
“I truly enjoy being here. I often tell people that during my first two years I mostly stayed downtown, only traveling between home and practice. Over the last year, I’ve really settled in and feel at home. It’s a place I love, and my family enjoys spending time here as well. I couldn’t be happier as a member of the Orlando Magic and look forward to many more years ahead.”
Banchero and German national Franz Wagner are pivotal to Orlando’s future. Wagner also discussed their partnership.
“We share a strong bond. As we grow and our responsibilities change, it’s essential that we maintain open communication. I am excited to continue strengthening that connection and to keep playing alongside him,” Wagner said during the exit interviews.
During the regular season, Banchero averaged 25.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists. He stepped up his performance in the playoffs, averaging 29.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in the series against Boston.
