Two years after his previous stint in the NBA, Michael Carter-Williams is preparing to take on his inaugural boxing match.
On Sunday, the 33-year-old American guard shared insights with TMZ Sports about his transition from basketball to boxing, joining the ranks of former NBA athletes like Nate Robinson, Deron Williams, Nick Young, and Lamar Odom.
“We’ll see where this journey leads me, but I definitely intend to fight,” he mentioned, essentially dismissing the idea of returning to basketball. “I’m eager to participate in several fights.”
After undergoing training in the boxing ring, he will solidify his shift to the sport by competing against amateur boxer Sam Khati on May 29. This three-round bout, which is part of the Broad Street Brawl at New York’s Lehman Ballroom, will benefit charity.
“I know my opponents will come in looking to take me down, and that’s precisely the mindset I’m adopting,” the Hamilton, Massachusetts native explained regarding his boxing strategy.
Drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 11th overall pick in 2013, he was named Rookie of the Year during his inaugural season. However, various injuries hindered his career progression. After his last game in the NBA, he made a comeback in the G League and briefly played for the Mexico City Capitanes in 2023 before announcing his retirement in 2024.
Throughout his career, he participated in 411 NBA games, representing teams such as the Sixers, Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls, Charlotte Hornets, and Houston Rockets.
