The presentation of the NBA project in Geneva to EuroLeague clubs could complicate potential collaboration among all parties concerned.
According to sources from Eurohoops, the NBA has unequivocally stated that the NBA Europe initiative will only include teams from European countries, with Israel as the sole exception.
As a result, Dubai BC, which is anticipated to enter the EuroCup or EuroLeague next season, is already excluded from this new initiative. This is notable given the NBA’s existing partnership in the region with Abu Dhabi, which has facilitated pre-season games at Etihad Arena.
With EuroLeague stakeholders set to vote on the possible expansion to 20 teams, which could include Dubai BC, the NBA’s stance introduces another layer of conflict with the current objectives of the EuroLeague.
It remains uncertain whether this situation could evolve in the future or if the NBA has independent plans for the Middle East that do not align with the EuroLeague’s expansion strategy.
Additionally, it is important to highlight that FIBA has previously opposed the entry of Dubai BC into the EuroLeague, arguing that the local basketball authorities belong to FIBA Asia rather than FIBA Europe.
