Having led the national team since 2015 in his second term—a tenure marked by significant achievements, including gold medals at EuroBasket 2009, EuroBasket 2011, and EuroBasket 2015, along with silver at the London 2012 Olympics and bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympics and EuroBasket 2017, as well as gold at the 2019 World Cup and EuroBasket 2022—Scariolo would be returning to club coaching after parting ways with Virtus Bologna in 2023.

Should Scariolo’s move to the NBA be finalized, it would mark his debut as a head coach in the league, following his prior role as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors from 2018 to 2021. Currently, the only NBA team without a head coach is the Phoenix Suns, who dismissed Mike Budenholzer on April 14 after a disappointing season.

Two teams that might have been ideal for Scariolo are no longer options, as the San Antonio Spurs have appointed Mitch Johnson as head coach following Gregg Popovich’s retirement, and the Memphis Grizzlies (the team of Santi Aldama) have hired Tuomas Iisalo. This leaves the field open for various opportunities.
