Wembanyama Shines with Near Triple-Double to Propel Spurs in Overtime Thrill

The San Antonio Spurs triumphed over the New Orleans Pelicans, 120-116, in an overtime thriller on Friday.

During their visit to the Smoothie King Center, Victor Wembanyama delivered an impressive performance, achieving a double-double with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and also contributing nine blocks, two assists, and one steal. His final block set the tone for a strong start in the overtime period. The 21-year-old French center displayed remarkable instincts after missing a shot against Zion Williamson at the end of regulation, helping his team improve to 2-0 in the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season.

“I had a great time, but it was intense,” Wembanyama shared at the beginning of the postgame press conference.

His Polish teammate Jeremy Sochan was sidelined due to a left wrist sprain, while the Pelicans were missing Croatian Karlo Matkovic, who was dealing with low back spasms.

In another game, with just 5.2 seconds remaining, Domantas Sabonis executed a 2+1 play and Dennis Schroder made a crucial defensive stop, enabling the Sacramento Kings to edge out the Utah Jazz, 105-104, at Golden 1 Center. Sabonis, who had missed the season opener because of a right hamstring strain, bounced back to register a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Schroder contributed 17 points, while Croatian Dario Saric added five points off the bench. French player Maxime Raynaud did not see action. For the Jazz, Lauri Markkanen topped the scoring with 33 points on 12-of-23 shooting, including 4-of-13 from three-point range. Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, starting for Utah, added nine points, and Bosnian Jusuf Nurkic finished with four points and 11 rebounds.

In the Kia Center, German Franz Wagner scored a game-high 27 points, but the Orlando Magic squandered a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter, losing 111-107 to the Atlanta Hawks. His fellow countryman, Tristan da Silva, contributed 15 points, while Georgian Goga Bitadze chipped in three points. The French player Noah Penda did not participate, and Moritz Wagner remained out due to a left knee recovery. On the victorious side, the Hawks were missing Latvian Kristaps Porzingis and French Zaccharie Risacher due to injury, with the team also without Nikola Djurisic and Eli Ndiaye, who did not travel to Orlando. Only Czech Vit Krejci was available among the European players for head coach Quin Snyder, scoring five points.

At the American Airlines Center, Swiss Kyshawn George exploded for 34 points on 11-of-15 shooting, including seven from three-point territory, along with 11 rebounds to record a double-double, leading the Washington Wizards to a 117-107 victory against the Dallas Mavericks. French player Alex Sarr added 14 points, while Serbian Tristan Vukcevic recorded two points. Frenchman Bilal Coulibaly remained on the injury list following right hand surgery.

The Portland Trail Blazers managed a convincing 139-119 win over the Golden State Warriors at Moda Center, with Israeli Deni Avdija scoring the team’s high of 26 points and Belgian Toumani Camara adding 19 points. French player Rayan Rupert logged 3:43 on the court with one rebound and one assist, while fellow French newcomer Sidy Cissoko did not play. For the Warriors, Dutch player Quinten Post started and contributed five points.

In FedExForum, Serbian Nikola Jovic and Italian Simone Fontecchio spearheaded the Miami Heat to a 146-114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies, scoring 20 and 14 points respectively. Swedish Pelle Larsson also made his mark with eight points, while Russian Vladislav Goldin and Lithuanian Kasparas Jakucionis (right groin strain) were not in action. For the Grizzlies, Spanish Santi Aldama tallied 13 points.

Despite Kevin Durant’s stellar 37-point performance, the Detroit Pistons managed a close 115-111 win over the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center. Turkish Alperen Sengun put up 17 points, along with seven assists, seven rebounds, and three steals, while Swiss reserve Clint Capela played only four minutes, scoring two points. On the winning side, Swedish Bobi Klintman remained on the bench.

In the Intuit Dome, the Los Angeles Clippers defeated the Phoenix Suns 129-102. Croatian Ivica Zubac scored eight points, Swiss Yanic Konan Niederhauser added six points, and French Nicolas Batum had three points, while Serbian Bogdan Bogdanovic did not play.
