Spurs Make History with Perfect 5-0 Start: Wembanyama Celebrates Team Effort

The San Antonio Spurs have started the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season with a perfect 5-0 record by defeating the Miami Heat 107-101 at the Frost Bank Center. This marks the first time in the franchise’s history that they’ve opened a campaign with five consecutive victories. Victor Wembanyama led the charge with an impressive performance of 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, five blocks, and one steal, playing just shy of 40 minutes.

“We put in the effort. We’ve kicked off the season on a high note, and we intend to maintain this momentum for as long as we can. It feels rewarding to see our hard work translate into wins, especially when sometimes we play well but don’t secure the results we want,” said the 21-year-old French standout during the postgame press conference, responding to inquiries about their remarkable 5-0 start.

“I’m going to keep playing aggressively until I find myself getting dunked on more than I block shots, but I doubt that any of us will see that day,” the talented player humorously remarked when discussing his defensive approach compared to others.

Teammate Jeremy Sochan, dealing with a left wrist sprain, remained on the injury list. Meanwhile, on the other side, Kasparas Jakucionis from Lithuania is recovering from a right groin strain, and Vladislav Goldin from Russia was also unavailable. However, Italian sharpshooter Simone Fontecchio scored 18 points, Swedish player Pelle Larsson contributed five points, while Serbian Nikola Jovic logged 9 minutes and 30 seconds despite suffering a right hip contusion, although he did not score.

“It’s going to be fascinating once we have our full roster back, but for now, we need to focus on the present and the players who are available to us,” said 29-year-old Fontecchio, reflecting on the limited roster options for coach Erik Spoelstra.

Bilal Coulibaly, who previously played alongside Wembanyama at Metropolitans 92, returned from a right thumb surgery following an injury sustained at EuroBasket 2025 representing France. He scored 16 points as a starter for the Washington Wizards, who fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder 127-108 at Paycom Center. Fellow French player Alex Sarr added 14 points in the starting lineup, while Swiss athlete Kyshawn George contributed 12 points. Serbian bench player Tristan Vukcevic managed three points. For the Thunder, defending champions improved their record to 6-0, with Ajay Mitchell coming off the bench to score 20 points, German starter Isaiah Hartenstein adding 17 points, and French player Ousmane Dieng putting in two points, although Serbian Nikola Topic was inactive due to ongoing treatment for testicular cancer.

The Orlando Magic broke free from a four-game losing streak, defeating the Charlotte Hornets 123-107 at Spectrum Center. Franz Wagner played through a left heel contusion while scoring a game-high 21 points. His fellow German Tristan da Silva netted 19 points, Georgian Goga Bitadze contributed six points, and French player Noah Penda added three points, though Moritz Wagner remained out as he recovers from a left knee injury. Two French reserves for the Magic, Moussa Diabate scored ten points, while Tidjane Salaun did not get on the scoreboard.

In a noteworthy development, despite Greek superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo being initially listed as probable due to left knee soreness, he was subsequently ruled out for Thursday’s game. The Milwaukee Bucks still managed to overpower the Golden State Warriors 120-110 at Fiserv Forum. Giannis’s brothers were also unavailable, with Thanasis sitting on the bench and Alex not in the lineup. Dutch player Quinten Post was part of the starting five for the Warriors but played just 9:39, gathering three rebounds.
