Phoenix Suns Shake Up Front Office: Brian Gregory Steps Up as New GM Amidst Disappointing Season

PHOENIX (AP)— On Thursday, the Phoenix Suns elevated Brian Gregory to the position of general manager in a significant overhaul of their front office, following a season that marked one of the franchise’s least successful to date.

The team officially announced today that Brian Gregory will assume the general manager role, while James Jones will shift to become a senior advisor.

Additionally, the Suns revealed that James Jones, previously the general manager, will now serve as a senior advisor. Oronde Taliaferro has been promoted to assistant general manager, and Paul Rivers will take on basketball operations duties alongside his existing responsibilities as chief innovation officer.

“Brian has been an essential part of our front office, significantly contributing to the drafting and development of our younger players,” stated Mat Ishbia, owner of the Phoenix Suns. “I’m thrilled for him to move into the role of general manager. His basketball intelligence is exceptional, and I believe he will help revolutionize and uplift our team.”

Gregory joined the Suns in 2023 and was serving as the vice president of player programming. He played a crucial role in the Suns’ selection of Ryan Dunn and Oso Ighodaro during last year’s draft, both of whom showcased promising potential in their rookie seasons.

With 19 seasons of experience as a college basketball coach at institutions like Dayton (2003-2011), Georgia Tech (2011-2016), and South Florida (2017-2023), Gregory also served as an assistant coach at Michigan State from 1999 to 2003, coinciding with Ishbia’s time as a walk-on for the Spartans.

This past season, the Suns aimed for a championship, buoyed by their All-Star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, yet they ended with a disappointing 36-46 record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

This summer, Gregory will face several key decisions, particularly concerning Durant, who, while under contract for the upcoming year, also stands as one of the few lucrative trade assets available for the franchise.
